Caution ! Dynamic AF versus single point AF... !

Well, I don't know the answer to either of your questions. I can't even hazard a guess.  I agree with Marianne's apparent position, in that, it should be an on/off feature that is user selectable.

Yes, this is the same kind of thing that I have been seeing with the d7k. Compared to the d300/d700, the d7k AF is less reliable, much more prone to misfocus for me.  But, that's because I primarily use AF-C, 9 or 21 pt dynamic, whether I really need it or not.  Now that I know how it and the d800 actually work in dynamic area focus, I should be able to make both of them more reliably for me.

This is the most disappointing thing of all.  I don't get too upset over mistakes on new cameras, especially ones of rather small significance in the overall scheme of things.  But, this isn't new stuff. It's been going on for several years, without documentation and without a fix.  That's what bothers me, a great deal. Why do I have to suffer frustration with a camera for a year and then find out the probable reason why, in a thread on a different, newer camera?  Why have focus priority if it doesn't work as described? If Nikon really felt that dynamic area focus is better the way it works on the d7k and d800, why isn't it documented?  Why do we have to learn this stuff by accident?  Why won't they fix it after users complain about it?  I know a lot of users that have complained to Nikon about focus priority/focus trapping, but obviously, they don't care.
