Robert/Tony, glad you guys patched it up - was a bit worried that had unwittingly started an argument. As you will know from my last two post in reply to you both, I am very grateful for your input, and I am going to make some effort to replace my assumed faulty feeder, or get it repaired. I have a 6m sabbatical coming my way later this year and I am in the process of getting myself ready for the projects I have lined up for that time - hence dusting off the scanner. So whilst in reality I probably don't need the quality this scanner could potentially deliver up - I have (or will have) the time to at least try and take advantage of it. I will let you know how I get on. If I get nowhere I will stick the thing on eBay with full disclosure and maybe someone can get something from it rather than just trashing it - but I still have some hope it may not come to that.
