I have 2 D800s and unfortunately they only work in studio....

In your case there is something systematic going wrong... you probably also used dynamic AF

and not single point...

If you want excact focus only set it to S in af-c or set it to af-s......and select an area with the focus

that you want it to go to or use a field that is on theb same level with enough contrast

!

Unbelievable. No, I am not some newbie, I was using centre point only.

Why do you take it so personally? I've been shooting for 40 years, digital for 12. I know a ton about photography and the operation of my cameras. I am no newbie either. BUT, I did not know that in dynamic area AF mode that the camera would decide to use one of the adjacent AF sensors to acquire a "suitable" subject. The manual states that dynamic area is used to continue to track a subject if it briefly leaves the area under the selected AF point.

So Peter asked a relevant question.
