400/5.6 is good but

1) not IS

2) not really usable with 2x TC, because AF would not work and the viewfinder image is too dark to focus manually, especially with a moving subject.

Thanks for info. I use a 5Diii & 7D, I use the 7D for wild life & distance. My 400f/5.6 is the best I have used so far & I wondered how the Sigma would work with a 7D & converter. I guess I better start saving. Bab

I have a 400 f5.6 as well. It's sharper than the Sigma but it's sharper than practically anything.

The Sigma has better bokeh and of course a zoom range but is WAY WAY heavier.
