If you want set and forget settings, just use Auto mode. However, you really can't adjust anything in Auto mode.

For automatic shots, with some adjustability, use Program Mode. Use the control ring to adjust ISO if necessary. Use exposure compensation if photos come out too bright or dark.

Other basic settings:

Change ISO Rate of change to SLOW. At Standard Rate of Change, the S100 chooses high ISO (lower quality) very quickly. By changing the rate of change to slow, the S100 will try harder to keep the ISO low.

AWB - Auto White Balance. The Canon S100 has excellent auto white balance, so set it and forget it.

My colors: This is a matter of personal preference so it's up to you. Neutral is the most, well, neutral setting. "My colors off" provides a little more saturation and contrast. Vivid provides the heaviest color and contrast.
