I know what you mean. Other family members don't have time for all the set-up etc. I have missed some of those shots as well, but usually focusing on the background instead of the person. Pushing the Fstop higher will make things more forgiving, and I may spot focus more often. I like my 5n, for the touch focus, as long as remember to use it! It is especially good for close up photos of flowers where I can easily define which flower I want in focus.
Hopefully you can retain enough,of the background to give people the feel of the location, and you can take separate pictures that highlight location.
