Years ago when I took pictures inside a cathedral, say, I'd take two shots, one exposed for the stained glass and one exposed for the dark interior. Then I'd align them in Photoshop using layers and cut around the windows. Of course now with HDR things are made a lot simpler. As others have said, there are free trial versions of some software. You don't need a camera with HDR of course; bracketing will do. Or as in my case years ago, you don't even need bracketing!
