A simpler way to do HDR?

Is there a simple way to create HDR images?  I know that there is software available for doing so, and that might interest me in the future, if I were to become sold on it.  But for now, or maybe I should say, as a trial period, is there an easy and cheap (free) way to "try this out" before committing to it more seriously?
