I have 2 D800s and unfortunately they only work in studio....

I'd like to better understand the issues that you guys are having.  I just got my d800 last week and most of my initial shots with it have been indoors, in low light tungsten, high ISO stuff.  I'm not seeing anything unusual with the AF, but I'm not seeing the claimed "improved low light" AF over my d3s or d300. But, I'm not shooting at any significant distance, usually within 10 feet or so.

So, what lenses are you using, at what distances?  You say medium to far distances, but I don't understand what you mean by that.  Are you using the cross hair sensors, fast glass, maybe 24-70 or 28-70?  Are you then viewing at 100% to determine focus accuracy?

In the past, I've had problems with other cameras in low light conditions, trying to AF on the eyes, but if the subject is too far away and the AF sensor isn't confined specifically to the eye area with enough contrast, then AF accuracy goes way down.

So, if you can give me more detailed info, I'd like to try to duplicate your experiences.  I have many of the typical pro level lenses that would be used for portrait, weddings, ie 85 f/1.4, 105 and 135 f/2 DC, 50 f/1.4, 28-70 and 24-70.  Let me know if one of those lenses is part of your issue and I'll use the ones you indicate.
