I have a 70-200 II and 300 F2.8II and the 300 is even better than the zoom (which is superb in it own right). I havent compared colour/contrast side by side but the 300 is sharper wide open as you'd expect and I feel the AF is in general as fast as any lens I've ever used. At longer FLs the initial degree of defocus makes a big difference to AF as does the limiter setting so it's difficult to compare meaningfully. The Mk II superteles are the only lenses I've used which I would consider genuinely sharp with the 2X extender.
