I really enjoy seeing brokeh in some of the portrait photos with my D5000 + 55-200.

Is Brokeh a factor of the camera and sensor size or more of the lens? Assuming more on the lens and DOF?

If I get the 18.5 , will I be able to shoot portraits and throw background out of focus ?

Wait for the 32mm f1.2, it has much shadower DOF. 32mm is ideal for portrait.

The closer your camera to your subject, the shadower the DoF.

The larger the aperture you use, the shadower the DoF.

The longer the focal length of the lens you use, the shadower the DoF.

If you use a 30-110mm at longer focal lengh, say 60mm or 80mm, you can also achieve shadower DoF.

Of course, you will need to get farther away from your subject, which maybe inconvenient.

For portraits on Nikon 1 system, 32mm is the ideal focal length.
