Frankly, I think the vast majority of desktop users would also prefer one of those alternatives if they were aware of them and gave them a "test drive"; as Microsoft is not doing themselves any favors by making the types of radical changes in Win 8 that they're attempting to force on Windows users.

If only they knew what was good for them. I've been using 'nix since Solaris (Sparc Classic) and FreeBSD 1.0 in '93. There is a reason it has a tiny marketshare on the desktop market, despite its considerable evolution. I agree with you about clouds and convergence (see Live365), but not that the desktop market will somehow evaporate. I started out reading these Win8 threads in November or so, and, like dude, where's my desktop? You're turning my productivity device into a content/entertainment delivery ecosystem? wtf? Then I realized how easy it was to have both. I don't feel "forced." I feel like I'm being given a new OS with a lot of nifty features.

I paid nearly $1000 for my IPad 3. For a couple of hundred more for a Surface Pro I get an i5/Win8 touchscreen with pressure-sensitive pen that can connect (displayport) to my 30" NEC and function as a full desktop. And all those other real improvements in the links I provided above.

But my real point is how many PCs will ship with Win8 in 2013, whatever the debate is here.
