If you have either a Western Digital or Seagate/Maxtor hard drive (either internal or external) connected to your system, you can download and use the Western Digital or Seagate branded versions of Acronis TrueImage, which do support restoring to a smaller hard drive (assuming it all fits).

You can download the branded versions of Acronis from:

Western Digital- http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en

Seagate- http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/enterprise-hard-drives/savvio-15k/discwizard-master-dl/

Reading the boiler plate for the Seagate branded backup, it appears that the new drive that the backup is restored to, has to be a Seagate or WD drive.  If that's true, that backup will be too restrictive as I may want to buy a Samsung or other brand drive when the time comes.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Sky
