The Tamron 70-300 might be a better lens for just ~$50 more. Aperture starts at f4 and it uses ultrasonic drive focusing (like SSM) rather than SAM. Overall construction seems better and it also has the focusing window. On the other hand, the Tamron's focal length starts at 70mm and it is ~300 grams heavier than the Sony 55-300mm.

I just bought a 2 month old Tamron SP 70-300 for $299 shipped. I'm just blown away with with the AF speed and sharpness (even at 300mm) of the lens!!! It makes the AF on my SAL18135 feel dog slow. It's a bit big and heavy but I can live with given it's performance.
