Totally agree. Everybody says "buy glass, it lasts forever". I say BS regarding modern DLSR lenses. That's not to say a modern IS lens won't give you 20+ years of trouble-free service, but it's highly unlikely.
Manual focus primes are really the only choice if you want lenses that could last a lifetime of shooting.
