A modern EF lens is a different beast. If you have IS and USM then you have delicate mechanics, electronics and ultrasonic motor. All electronics are prone to sudden failure and IS systems can wear out or break as well without any input from you.

So I would not assume that modern day lenses last forever.

Totally agree.  Everybody says "buy glass, it lasts forever".  I say BS regarding modern DLSR lenses.   That's not to say a modern IS lens won't give you 20+ years of trouble-free service, but it's highly unlikely.

Manual focus primes are really the only choice if you want lenses that could last a lifetime of shooting.
