How important is VR in a lens?

I just bought a Nikon 1 11-27.5mm with no Vibration Control, and was surprised to see several images with blur due to camera movement even at 1/30-sec. I cranked up the shutter speed to 1/500 and higher and got supersharp images. I do not have steady hands, so that means images in low light will present a problem. The kit lens 10-30mm has VR, and I did not experience nearly the number of blurry images with that lens.  With such a small format sensor as The Nikon 1, I assume camera shake is  a big factor. I guess the 11-27.5 lens is going back, despite its fine optical qualities and diminutive size.
