The SLR Gear review does seem to be something of an outlier in regards to sharpness. In its test, DXO gave the 70-200/4 a rating of 19mpx compared with 15 for the 105VR macro and 13 for the 70-200VR/2.8 (mkI).
The SLR Gear review seems a little tardy in general. Its specs list the 70-200/4 as having a maximum aperture of F2.8 and while they seem to imply sharpness is inferior to the 2.8, they do not seem to have tested the 2.8 on the 800e as they did the F4 version. So I am a little doubtful as to the veracity of their advice in this instance.
