What would you choose for Safari: 2x III extender or 650D/T4i ????
Jan 11, 2013

I am going on a month self-drive safari in Namibia and Botswana (with some guided trips).

I have the following gear:

5D MIII

Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC

Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II

Canon EF1.4x III

Reading on the fora it seems that you need as much reach as you can get on safari and that 400-400+ is prefered.

I was thinking of investing some more for my trip in a canon 17-40 L for some nice landscape shots and something for more reach.

I am contemplating the following options.

a Canon EF 2x III extender (+/- 400 euro) orrrr maybe a bit out of the box thinking a 650D/T4i (+/- 500 euro)...

The 2x would give you 140-400mm F5.6 IS on the 5D mIII with all the benifits of that body.

The 650D/T4i would give you 1.6x +1.4x 70-200= 156-448 F/4 though with the downside of less precise AF, 95% VF coverage, no weather sealing on the body. A plus would be that I would have 2 bodies so I could put a WA on the 5D mIII and wouldn't have to switch lenses during a safari.

I have considerd the 100-400L, though think I would prefer more flexibility of the 70-200 with a extender + putting the money I save on buying the 100-400 into a 17-40L.

What would you choose/recommend? Do you suggest other options?

Thanks for your help,

Jos
