I do a lot of macro stuff of small native orchids and other flowers and I sell quite a lot of my work but I use a D700 & D800 for that. I recently got the d5100 as an easy walk around camera for day to day stuff. I found manual focus very hard to do as the viewfinder is small and not very eye friendly.

Liveview outside in available light is clunky and hard to see to use properly. I would stick with an AF-S lens of 90mm or 85mm so you can use auto focus, it works fine for flowers and quick moving insects, particularly if you put it into continuous focus mode and click away. You can get many keepers that way. Works great for portrait shots too if you are out of the studio just doing candids.

Thanks, that's good info.
