I don't think that Sony had a camera that could really benefit from this lens until the A99 appeared.
It's a great lens and I love my Canon mount version but I wouldn't buy it for my A77 because the A77 simply isn't good enough in low light to justify using it with a $3,200 lens.
Over here in Switzerland it only costs around 2'300 Chf, which is about 2'500 USD right now.
What about not using it in low-light? 99% of my bird photography is done in daylight, and while the A77 noise performance isn't great, it isn't all that bad either. What's worse on the A77 is the slide-show effect for BIF at faster frame rates, that alone will probalby make me switch to Canikon some day in the future.
