Problems with importing large number of files to iphoto on a new mac mini
Jan 11, 2013

Dear all,

Need some advice! I have a brand new mac mini, the small one with 2,5 ghz and 4 gb in ram, and to my surprice iPhoto keeps getting into "not respond" mode when I try to import above a couple of thousand photos. If I keep the imports to around 700-900 photos, no problem, but above 2000 or so, the mac finally seems to cave in. Checking memory usage, it seems the mac finally runs out of ram trying to import the files.

Is the 4 gb in ram the reason, or is iphoto not that good handling a larger set of photos? I need to handle my 75000 photo library!

Oh, I have all my photos on an external drive, basically no images will be on the 500 gb hard drive, only the iphoto library. And what about Aperture in this sense, I guess its more suitable for my needs in terms of performance etc.

I come from a Win 7, Picasa / Lightroom environment.

Thanks,

C
