VR should not be used with a tripod—unless the tripod is on something that vibrates. Then you should use Active VR. For tripod users in most cases the only thing VR gives you is a heavier and bulkier lens.

I am going to speak to the trip leader again before making any decisions but I'm leaning toward just buying the 300 F.4 which is on sale at the moment for $1,190. To rent a lens for the time I would need it costs around $427 plus insurance.

Where did you find the 300 f/4 for $1,190? I just paid $1,369. I've also ordered the Kirk replacement collar for greater stability at slow shutter speeds on a tripod.
