How could I have improved this shot?

Had a beautiful vista driving by the lake this morning.  I see photos like this that look out of this world.  What could I have done to make mine better?  The as-shot is not so hot.  It seems over-exposed for one thing but due to the DR should I have just stopped up and allowed the trees to be black?  I shot this raw and manual with a D600.
