"If you need it, it can't "ruin" an image which you wouldn't otherwise get, can it?" No, it's only for 18mm wide angle shots.
"Since you take it off for all other focal lengths, it can't "ruin" the camera or its lens, can it? No. Like I've said, it specifically designed for the LX5 by the same Panasonic make.
I just hate taking the darn thing off and then screwing on a filter ready for a regular shot….too much of a hassle. The DMW-LWA52 18mm conversion lens is a little heavy but not too bad.
