Nikon 16-35 f/4 - Why so hard to find?

Rented this lens over the summer and thought it was great.   Finally have saved enough $ to purchase one and they have not been in stock anywhere since early-Dec.

Even on Ebay/Amazon Marketplace it is gouge city and I will not pay more than list, no way I will feed that mess.   Actually today (now) on Amazon Marketplace there are none even listed as new.

Have bid on a few used on Ebay ones but the people keep bidding them up over the new price.

Is this lens that popular or is it going to be discontinued?

Right now on Amazon, there is not even a "notify me when in stock link" anymore, that is the only reason I said anything about being discontinued.  Maybe their wait list is just that long.

Adorama and B&H both have order and wait.  Any idea if one of them is faster or gets better stock?
