This shot could be fixed, but another shot on a darker blanket is a good idea. Also some careful grooming before the shoot.
Since the DoF is so shallow, a much tighter crop might be more effective. If you're going to include the ears, try to get them in focus.

The darker colour blanket that you have created certainly does give an indication of how much better it could look.
As for the grooming, my sister insisted on an ungroomed look, which I disagreed with. Maybe I should have given the dog a quick brush while she wasn't looking!
