Renting a Nikon AF-S 300mmF/2.8 VRII versus a 300mmF/2.8 VR1 vs. 300mm F4.0

I think you should also take into account the size and weight of the lens and how you expect to use it in Costa Rica. If you plan to be hiking through the rain forest with your set up you may want to consider the much smaller and lighter 300mm f4 af-s. Hiking under the canopy on a hot, humid day is no picnic. Add a large heaving lens and photo gear and you may wish you had a P&S. It can get a little dark under the canopy but the D800 should help a lot.

BTW if you decide to buy the 300mm f4 you may want to consider a used lens. That way if you decide not to keep it you can sell it after you get back. You could sell it for close to or as much as you paid for it.
