I would not be so quick to avoid automode if your just learning. At the least after shooting an image in P,S,A,M mode which ever you use, take a second shot in auto. Then when reviewing your images if auto did a better job you can check the exif info to how what the camera settings were and how it differed from yours. Think of the auto mode as insurance. Learn to recognize difficult lighting situations. It's tose situations thatwill fool you and the camera's automode
