How to self portrait with timer G12

Ok I want to successfully {in focus} set the camera on a mini tripod compose the shot of a building or landmark, then set the timer and get in front so that I am in the shot composed and have the G12 take a correctly focused shot.  I tried this and keep getting me out of focus?

Suggestions?  Maybe you should type slow so I can understand!
