Using SDHC cards in the DCS Pro 14n with a SD to CF adapter
4 months ago
I have not been here for awhile, but I started using my 14n again and discovered something that might interest the Pro 14n users (not sure about 14nx or SLRn). The 14n will only accept a standard SD (not HC) card in the SD slot up to 2GB, and for my 14n the Compact Flash slot accepts CF cards or Microdrives up to 4 GB. I always shoot raw DCR files so this limits the number of exposures to slightly more than 200 on one 4 GB CF card. I recently bought a SD to CF Adapter card (abour $15 US) hoping to use it when I travel to download the SD cards from my Canon camera to an old "Digital Wallet" disk drive that only accepts CF cards in a PCMCIA adapter. Well, the adapter did not work for SDHC cards in the Digital Wallet - it would only work for standard SD up to 2 GB. It was a different story when I tried the adapter in the 14n camera. I loaded a Sony 16GB SDHC card in the adapter, put it in the CF slot in the 14n, and surprisingly the camera accepted it and showed a capacity of 907 raw DCR exposures. I have not taken that many exposures yet, but it is great news for 14n owners to know they can exceed the old limits. SD cards are cheap and the adapter says it can supports SDXC/SDHC/SD cards of any capacity - The Sony card I used was a 16 GB Class 10. The SD slot in the 14n is of course limited to SD 2 GB, but I only use that card as a backup when the card in the CF slot fills up, which will now not be too often. Here is a link to Amazon where I bought the SD to CF adapter card - the SD card slides fully into the adapter - the form factor of the adapter is CF Type II (like a Microdrive):
If anyone adopts this procedure, let us know how it works in your camera, what type of SD card you used, etc.
