I still think that their latest camera sensor is a price issue. Nikon more than likely base their decisions based each body. If Sony for example won't give them a deal on the sensors where they feel that the product is marketable, Nikon's not going to buy from them. You look elsewhere or play the numbers game with the competition by asking and showing what the competition from the other side is asking and they give you a lower price.
It may have been a price issue to change, but I would bet my shirt the new sensor will at least match the sony sensor. The D5200 is a step up from D3200. How do they expect to sell a camera with an IQ downgrade? We don't need to look too far to see what happens when customers don't get the IQ they expect, a99...No way will Nikon of all companies release a D5200 with a junk sensor, they would sooner not release anything.
Which means the sensor is pretty good. This means once the D5200 testing shows up on DXO, other brands may be looking at this same sensor. This means more profit, more R&D to spend, even more improved non sony sensors. Competition is indeed good, we will get better sensors because of it.
I've stated this in one of my earlier post, where I'd pointed out that Nikon isn't going to put out a camera with a junk sensor before testing it. Which I'd concluded already that Nikon approved the Toshiba sensor.
Regarding A99. Subjective. I use the A99 and love every bit of it. There's nothing wrong with the quality coming out of the A99. And if Sony's sensors is the issue, the D600 would suffer. They don't, quality wise. Sony makes that sensor. Nikon's only issue has been non sensor related in that particular camera. Oil and dust don't equate to a sensor issue.
I believe this have nothing to do with lack of quality, but a price issue. The "better sensor" comment. Of course better sensors will come and part of the equation. But price might be too. A lack of quality isn't the reason why Nikon's using a Toshiba. Unless you have proof of this. ??? Every Nikon D600 owner and other Nikon but non D600 owners love the quality coming from the Sony sensors. As a matter of fact, a Nikon user recently praised Sony's sensors.
