Best light-weight, compact lens on DX for travel?

Last year I traveled in Guatemala. Took my D7000 with only the 16-85 zoom. It's a good quality lens, while lightweight. I had no regrets.

I favor the wide end, so the difference between 16 and 18 mm matters to me. If I was to take only a single prime, I would go wide, 24 mm, or even less if I could get it.
