The sensor is the heart of a system, if you remove the Sony sensor from Nikon 800, you can just through it away, you know.

Since Sony has been expanding aggressively including the release of several new high-end lenses (300mm/2.8 and Sony's 500mm f/4, etc..) and the new flagship A99, it's natural to stop selling the biggest advantage to competitors

This kind of logic in Sonyland here is very much twisted. Look, DxO mark shows that Sony sensors are much better than those of Canon and yet canon outsells Sony as well as Nikon. Do you think the make of those lenses can really make the loss in sensor business? Losing Nikon as one of the major buyers means tha Sony has to find another big buyer. Sony sensors are profitable to Sony not because of Sony cameras but other buyers. The only reason why Canon is not changing its fab is because being the only user, money invested in r&d and upgrade of its fab line is limited. i dont think Sony looks at this as most of you look at it.

You have a point, Sony needs a bigger marked for it's sensors, but has 2 options for that. Either by selling it's biggest advantage to competitors, or use this Sensor-advantage to sell more of it's own camera and lenses (as Canon does).

Canon can become the "only user" of it's own sensors because of good-old-sensors and many good lenses that drives the sale of many bodies. Canon's sensor-advantage is gone and belong to the past now. Lenses are mostly driving the sales of bodies now.

Sony has been expanding it's high-end lens lineup and I personally believe Sony is going to adapt the successful Canon model. Sony has a chance now, because Canon has fallen behind in sensor development, but needs more good lenses to catch up in optic too. The recent aggressive release of many new high-end lenses suggests this direction to me, too.

Sony seams to be trying to become the new "Canon" but time will show which direction Sony will take.

I think you have slightly missed the point . Canon with its old sensors still attract more market share than Sony with its new sensors. Definately the camera market works different than the phone market. Therefore Sony adopting the Canon market model will just quickly kill its profitable business, semiconductor. Again, look at the sensor used in the d3200, which is not a Sony sensor and yet is just as the same as the one in Nex7. Remember also that in FF, Nikon was successful with the D700 which did not use sensor from Sony. Nikon has the flexibility to use sensors from different suppliers as it sees fit a luxury tha Sony Imaging division does not have

Right. But you're failing to address a point here. While Nikon has that flexibility, Sony makes it's own sensors. So why would Sony need to have that flexibility? It defeats the purpose and point of making your own sensors, which leads to my next point. Sony has that option too. The difference here is, Nikon doesn't have the flexibility to make their own sensors like Sony or like Canon. If this were the case, all of their cameras would have a Nikon sensor. Nikon's "flexibility" more than likely has more to do with price than luxury.

Canon's market sensor share. If you're talking about solely on a Sony vs Canon cameras. Yes. But overall sensor market share. No. Sony has several companies that use their sensors.

That is the whole point. Sony needs to sell sensors to others to make profit. That is different from what some Sony enthusiasts think and that is that Sony needs to keep best sensors for itself. If they do that they wont have best sensors for long. That is my whole argument
