I have been an Ubuntu user for eight years and have been very satisfied. For photo editing, especially for large files, I recommend 64-bit if your hardware supports it. I found a few operations in G'MIC, especially deconvolution sharpening, that wouldn't work with 8 Gb of RAM in a 32-bit install but worked correctly in 64-bit.

I recommend Rawtherapee. It works well for me when color-managed using the specific camera's dcp file. Having said that, there are still some processes that seem to work better for me in GIMP and Ufraw.
