The 400f/5.6L is inexpensive and just swell, but if you really get the bug you're going to want a 500f/4L. Why? Well because you can put the 1.4x extender on it and have a 700f/5.6L IS. It won't focus quite as fast as the 400f/5.6L, or be as easy to handle, but it more than makes up for it focal length and image quality.

In addition the 500f/4L is a better solution than the 300f/2.8 and a 2x extender. Not as light, but still a better way to go for wildlife. I did not read the other replies, so excuse my repetition.
