I think is pretty normal. I am always amazed at how underexposed Ricoh images are. Canon are punchy SOC but not true I don't think. These do look a little dull but I guess it's the lighting. Have you tried some just banal outdoor shots? I think to see a range of images from a range of situations would help, and help you / us to see where the camera is weak.
