Without denying that Lightroom RAW conversion could be improved — because it could — I do think its issues are overblown by those who've spent very little time actually examining the files for themselves.

One of the things that's causing so much hysteria is that examples are being posted where a tiny fraction of the photo depicting something on the very fringe of what the camera's capable of resolving is shown at 100% and then people get in a panic about how bad it looks. What do you expect? All cameras have their limits in terms of what they can resolve, you can't just infinitely crop and expect usable images.

How the software treats these resolution limits also varies. Sometimes the barely-resolved detail will be sharpened so it looks somewhat 'watercolour', sometimes it's simply blurred. Which you prefer is down to preference but in neither case is there any significant difference to rendered detail. Lightroom is arguably too aggressive by default which certainly steers things more to the 'watercolor' side, but you can easily override its pre-sets.

There is a subtle loss of detail for sure, but in many if not most cases it's imperceptible unless doing extreme cropping.

Generally I agree with the above and other posts that are in the camp that LR4.3 conversions are acceptable.

I'm a long time Canon shooter and Raw only zealot. I've done more testing than I care to comparing the X-pro1 OOC Jpeg with Raw converted in LR.  In my testing the quality that has been decried as the 'watercolor' effect can be seen in some converted raw images with lots of high frequency detail at 200% view. This quality may be faintly discernible in some few (very few) files at 100% view on screen.  When it comes to printing these files, In NONE my test cases can I  see the WC effect in  12"x18" prints.  Naked eye comparisons of the same image as OOC Jpeg / converted Raw look very similar. Using a loupe I can see (faintly) the WC effect in the LR converted Raws. Under the loupe the effect in my prints looks like paint with a slight orange peel effect

I do want to see the X-trans Raw conversion evolve. I'm holding out for Adobe to get better before I spring for more gear (X100S may cause me to loose my resolve).

Oh, the Fuji OOC Jpegs have eroded my Raw zealotry. Woulda thunk it?
