Just bought 5D mark III - heard Nikon D800E is much better image Quality? did i make a mistake?

When these 2 cameras first came out there was a large number of threads claiming this one is better than the other on various feature. Plus the Canon forums acted like they were disappointed in the 5D3 mainly because it is an old sensor design that has been tweaked. They did not like the idea of Nikon taking the lead in the sensor department which was the area that Canon dominated in before.

The Nikon forum was happy until the endless posts about defective outermost left autofocus points and some had good copies and others had bad copies. Then there was a fair bit of annoyance about green/yellow cast the D800 has in its LCD and a slight green bias in its images.

Now it seems to have settled down finally. And it becomes clearer as pointed out that both cameras are very very good.

D800E strength are the highest resolution of a full frame DSLR. Great AF, white balance, sophisticated menus and features, video HDMI clean out.

5D3 has an excellent autofocus system, very good high ISO in jpeg (also works in video), less moire in video and an allround mature development of the 5D series.

So in short I agree you have not made a mistake (I have a D800E which I love and is superb in every way for me). The differences would not be enough to cover the cost of switching lenses.

If you are still wondering then I suggest you read the many comparison reviews so you can see the strengths and weaknesses of each in different uses. digitalrev has one, there was one from the camera shop in Canada and Masurov, Fred Miranda.
