NEX-7 AF dashed rectangle

I have my NEX-7 set to AF-S, Center. Sometimes (often in dimmer light), instead of getting the corners of a small centered rectangle for the focus area, I get a dashed rectangle around the entire frame. I still have the solid dot in the lower-left corner of the EVF (and LCD) which I believe means focus has been achieved. What does this mean?
