As the OMD is one of the best selling camera, I'd say their design decision was good, as far as I'm concerned I like it.
Ergonomics and design are pretty personal perceptions, I for one would not buy a PEN or a Sony NEX camera, while they LOOK fine, I don't like their handling.
All in all I think Olympus made the right choice with the OMD design and I hope that their OMD line will keep that form factor, for those who prefer the rangefinder style there is the PEN serie.
