An interesting thread.

I would add you should consider the newer 70-200mm F4 VR as its got superior VR and is sharper and no focus breathing. You give up F2.8 but with the excellent high ISO performance of the D800 that is not a big deal.

One issue with lots of primes is the constant lens changing.

The Trinity makes a lot of sense. I have the 14-24 and I use it for nightscapes and its probably the best lens out there for that. No flare.

My most used lens is the 24-70. Its does the bulk of my imaging.

50mm F1.8g is good but rendition is a bit harsh, same with 85mm F1.8g. Both very very sharp lenses but rendition not always beautiful.

Some older lenses are also gems and cheap as chips. 105mm F2.5AI is one like that.
