I've just been comparing the HS50 and the XS-1. Apart from staying with the 1/2 inch sensor it looks like an all new model. In size its fractionally smaller than the XS-1, and slightly lighter weight wise.

I haven't seen the specs for the size but looking at the pictures it looks the same size as the HS30.

On the surface there's a lot to like, at least from the initial data. Better number of shots from the battery. Faster AF, start up and write times. Vari-angle LCD (Very Nice!)

The only good thing about vari-angle LCD's is the fact that you can turn it around and never have to look at it. I use the EVF for viewing my pictures on the X-S1, you won't be able to that with the tiny EVF on the HS50.

920K dot LCD and EVF, good if not stellar.

Good LCD, poor EVF. The tiny EVF alone makes this camera a non starter.

I like the more rounded shape as well. Less squared off like the XS-1.

It will be interesting to see how the new EXR II sensor performs as well.

It may not be a direct replacement for the XS-1, especially when considering the sensor size difference, but it certainly seems like its a close cousin.

The SL1000 looks to be well specified as well and for those not needing a manual zoom and the extra bulk, the SL1000 is about the same as the HS20 weight wise, then it may be a contender for the replacement for the HS25.

Both cameras will bear following as they will suit different users and shooting requirements.

On paper at least the HS50 looks like being the leading contender to replace my HS20.

Ralph you could well be right, I've always wondered if they were taking a loss on the X-S1, If it were priced at £1000 it would still look like good value for money when compared to the latest crop of mid range DSLR's.

If you've still not held one in your hand you won't know what I'm talking about.

Paul.
