Why make an f/1.4 lens...

'Acceptably sharp' @ f1.4 is, well, acceptable. If I need to use f1.4 I'd rather have an f1.4 lens that is acceptably sharp @ f1.4 than an f2.8 lens. They get sharper stopped down - great! The same is true of slower lenses. I'd rather start from f1.4 if I can.
