How can you tell that VR works on a new lens

Nikon AF - One Shot ..... One Kill

Yep, this is the easiest and quickest method.  You don't need to bother with taking any pictures to compare WITH and WITHOUT VR.  Even if you can't hear the "click", you should easily be able to see the image stabilize through the VF if your VR is working - although I would suggest that at 300mm handheld, you really don't simulate camera shake.  It will occur even if you try not to!!
