Telephoto thoughts

I asked this over in the Nikon lens camp, but wanted to see if anyone here has any experience with a Nikkor ED 400mm AI-S 3.5. There's a used one available locally for what appears to be a pretty good—but still pause-inducing—price. I've searched a bit for online reviews, and most of those are generally positive.

Just curious if anyone here has any experience or feedback to share on this lens. At ~$1,000, is this a good value for the quality, or should i consider other options?
