Not OT--the original poster was concerned that the AF points were too clustered at the center for sports photography. I'm just asking why it matters?

I kind of talked about how having a dense AF point array was an advantage for sports in this post: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/50618683.

To expand off that one, having the AF array cover more of the frame means that it's less likely for a subject to positioned so that no AF sensor is over a good target. That means dynamic area/AF area expansion is more likely to succeed in keeping the subject in focus if it leaves the selected AF area. If you have points covering most of the frame, then it'll be almost impossible for the subject to "escape" the AF system's view assuming the photographer is doing a half decent job of tracking the subject.

Hopefully that makes sense?
