I noticed a lot of Monochrom images seem to have a dull lifeless feel to them, it might have the resolution but something about the images are not good. They seem to lack contrast and range. A lot of examples I have seen from this camera seem the same way.

I am wondering is it the Camera? Or is it just a difficult to master camera and what I have been seeing so far is people still learning the ropes?

Personally, I believe most people have forgotten films like Panatomic-X developed in Microdol gave a full tonal range and extremely fine grain. Much like the Monochrom. Most people shooting film seem to like coarse grain and extreme contrast, seems to be the trend. I don't like that look.

I've had the camera for two weeks. I have 50 or so lenses in Leica mount, ranging from the 1930s uncoated optics up through the Modern C-Sonnar and Noktons. So far, the Orange filter for outdoor works suits me.

The 9cm F4 uncoated Elmar has always produced low-conrast images, was well suited for high-contrast film. As stated, it was not well suited for the M Monochrom: the histograms were not filled out.

As far as mastering hard to use cameras, nothing is harder to use than the DCS200ir. The CCD is sensitive to IR, the light meter is not. No LCD, no histogram, nothing to look at until downloading across the SCSI interface to a computer. The M Monochrom- easy to use.

50 M mount lenses???   Wow. As for the flat images...if that is what you prefer, than you should love the MM.....cus that's what you get:)

I actually would love to own an MM but I can't personally afford to spend $8k on a B&W camera without selling my other gear...so unfortunately it is not for me.  With that said...if I could buy one I would definitely be on the other side of the coin, doing my work in post to add some contrast/depth to these images.  I shoot everything in RAW so I am used to dealing with flat images out of the can.. To each their own.
