Re: How well does the A99 work for sports photography

I was very tempted to jump ship and go for the Nikon D800E. Now I am very happy that I did not go for the Nikon but for the A99. Nevertheless, in your case I would look at the Canon 5D MK III.
I would not touch any Nikon camera at the moment, because I believe that the whole company policy is skewed. If you spend some time over at the Nikon forum you can read a whole bunch of threads re the horrific service people get from Nikon. And it it not only the service that is lacking but also the company that does not come forward with solutions to problems, leave alone admitting that they exist.
There were people over at the Nikon forum who at the beginning denied that the D600 has oil issues. Now the same people have suddenly changed their minds after having spend hundreds of dollars on cleaning material to remove those spots. I would never spend that amount of money to get a camera that is in my humble opinion faulty.
The D800 while producing some outstanding results has still the left AF issue and while this might not be of any importance to you right now it might become an issue should you decide on selling it one day.
Canon has always been the choice of sports photographers and while I personally can not stand the menu system of the Canon cameras nor do I like their flash system, I do believe for sports they are outstanding quality. I am not sure though whether the new 5D3 has the same banding issues as the 5D2 but this should be easy to find out over at the Canon forum.
At the end of the day you have to decide which of the cameras' handling most suits your style of shooting. So perhaps spending some time with different models might help you decide.
Best of luck
Stef.
