Hawks Have Eyelids. Who Knew?!
Jan 7, 2013

Walking the dog yesterday in a protected natural habitat I rounded a corner in the path and came face to face with a large hawk sitting in a tree 100 ft. ahead of me.
It's rare to be so close to a big bird of prey like this so
I quickly reached into the camera bag and pulled out my Olympus E-M5 (the best camera is the one you have with you, and the lightweight, diminutive OMD goes everywhere with me).

The most interesting shot of the group is the centre one were you can clearly see the transparent grey inner eyelid. I had no idea hawks had this feature, and there is another shot where one eye is open and the other (perhaps towards the very strong wind?) is hooded with the inner eyelid, so they can split the use of this inner eyelid between eyes.
