What's the point of adding copyright info to EXIF?

I read that you can add copyright info (your name, etc) straight from the camera (in some models) or using Lightroom, Bridge, etc. My question is, if this copyright info can be changed later by any person using these software (Lightroom, etc), then how can you claim ownership of the copyright should your photo be used by someone else?
